Communications Manager

Description of Organization:

SIECUS seeks a highly motivated, creative, and ambitious Communications Manager to assist in the creation and execution of the organization’s communications strategy. The ideal candidate has a flair for words, an eye for detail, and is excited about translating policy wonk speak into stories that resonate with audiences of all backgrounds.


SIECUS is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to affirming sexuality as a fundamental part of being human, one that is worthy of dignity and respect. We advocate for the right of all people to accurate information, comprehensive education about sexuality, and sexual health services. We focus our work in education, policy, and strategic communications and through these strategies promote lifelong sexual health and well-being.

Position Responsibilities:

The Communications Manager, based in SIECUS’ office in downtown Washington, DC and reporting to the President & CEO, is responsible for the following:

  • Develop and implement campaigns in partnership with SIECUS staff that promote the organization’s mission, policy and program priorities, and fundraising efforts
  • Manage the SIECUS website, including transition to new website
  • Create and manage content for social media, e-mail list, and the website
  • Draft external communications such as press releases, statements, talking points, and blog posts
  • Monitor analytics for email, website, and social media to increase reach across audiences
  • Develop relationships with members of the press and manage press inquiries
  • Generate graphics and visual content for social media
  • Develop and maintain organizational communication guidelines and best practices including style guides
  • Assist with the production of SIECUS reports and publications
  • Assist with donor and funder correspondence, including fundraising appeals
  • Other duties as assigned



  • At least 4–6 years of previous communications work (this can include extended internships or fellowships, ongoing volunteer work, and part-time work)
  • Demonstrated exceptional organizational and project management skills
  • Commitment to advancing sexual and reproductive education, health, rights, and justice
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills with a proven track record of writing clear, structured, and persuasive communications (e.g., one-pagers, articles, press releases, blog posts, etc.); strong editing and proofreading skills and attention to detail
  • Fluency using Twitter, Facebook, and other social media platforms in addition to content management systems such as Hoot Suite
  • Fluency in analyzing social media metrics and using insights to build strategy, content, etc.
  • Experience with Word Press and/or other CMS and overseeing a website redesign


  • Prior experience working for or with sexual and reproductive health, rights, or justice organizations
  • Familiarity with Blue State Digital or similar online email/advocacy platforms
  • Proficiency editing and implementing graphics, photos, videos, etc.
  • Public relations experience (e.g. pitching journalists and managing relationships with the press)
