Position Responsibilities:
The Director of Capacity Building will report directly to the Vice President of the Global Legal Program (GLP). Under the Center’s ambitious new strategic plan, the Director of Capacity Building will oversee the establishment of a new capacity building unit, which will work across all regional teams within GLP to conceptualize and scale up the Center’s work with partners to drive forward innovative, sustainable initiatives to advance key reproductive rights issues in the Center’s focus countries. The Director of Capacity Building will co-supervise the Capacity Building Manager for Africa (together with the Regional Director for Africa) and the Capacity Building Manager for Asia (together with the Regional Director for Asia) and work closely with other staff in each of the regional programs in GLP. This position may be based in New York (preferred); Nairobi, Kenya; or Bogota, Colombia. Responsibilities: The Director of Capacity Building’s primary job responsibilities include, but are not limited to: • Conceptualizing, developing and managing a capacity-building program within GLP including all aspects of program planning and implementation, financial management and administrative oversight; • Designing and developing the capacity-building program’s work plan, as it relates to each of the regional programs, in accordance with the strategic plan; • Overseeing and monitoring successful implementation of the capacity-building program’s work plan, and recommending changes to the plan as needed; • Supporting regional programs with the design, coordination, facilitation, and effective implementation of capacity-building strategies and initiatives; • Ensuring the sharing of experiences and strategies and identifying synergies and opportunities to leverage comparative expertise among the regional programs, in the design and implementation of capacity-building initiatives; • Researching and staying abreast of capacity-building methodologies and trends; • Developing tools to ensure effective capacity building strategies, including documenting and disseminating lessons learned and best practices in capacity-building initiatives; • Developing capacity-building methodologies that are based on lessons learned from working with partners and other stakeholders; • Advising regional teams in designing and developing training modules, as relevant; • Supporting regional programs’ analysis and assessment of capacity building needs, and development of capacity-building strategies for specific partners; • Collaborating closely with other departments and staff, including the Communications Department and the Director of Pro Bono Services, to ensure thoughtful integration of capacity-building initiatives into the full array of the work of the Center; • Supporting the Development Department with fundraising concepts and proposals to secure program funding; assisting with cultivation of donors; supporting donor reporting; • Monitoring and reviewing the impact of capacity-building support, and recommending improvements to enhance efficiency and effectiveness of capacity-building initiatives; • Liaising with relevant partner organizations and building new partnerships, particularly brokering relationships among partners in different regions; • Developing and implementing annual program budget and monitoring spending; • Representing the Center externally on matters related to reproductive rights through public speaking and interaction with the media; • Supporting the design and implementation of wider institutional and GLP priorities, as appropriate (e.g., coordinating or supporting an intra or inter-departmental initiative); • Recruiting, training/mentoring, supervising and evaluating staff.

• Strong commitment to the Center’s mission, purpose, and values; • Proven track record of strong management and leadership across geographies in human rights, women’s rights, social justice or a related field; • Proficiency with activities, theories, and methods in capacity-building field, and substantial demonstrated experience in building the capacity of non-governmental partners and other stakeholders to influence change; • Proven experience in developing and operationalizing strategies that have taken a program or organization to the next stage of growth and performance; • Demonstrated international experience and expertise, including experience living and/or working at the field level in the Global South; • Strong training and facilitation skills in international, multicultural settings; • Good judgment and outstanding networking, team-building, coordination, and communication skills; • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with internal as well as external partners and other organizations, and build and maintain strong partnerships; • Excellent presentation, writing, analytical, and creative thinking skills; • Experience in oversight and management of budgets; • Familiarity with international and regional human rights law and knowledge of human rights systems and mechanisms preferred; • Advanced degree (Masters or equivalent) in a relevant field, such as law, management, or international affairs; • Minimum 7 years of related experience in developing/implementing capacity-building programs, particularly in countries in the Global South.
