Description of Organization:
Since 1933, Planned Parenthood of Nassau County has been serving its Long Island community by providing access to health services, sex education, and counseling and support for adolescents, women, and men. PPNC believes in the fundamental right of each individual to manage his or her fertility, regardless of the individual's income, marital status, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, age, national origin, or residence. As such, PPNC provides comprehensive reproductive and complementary health care services in a setting that preserves and protects the essential privacy and rights of each individual. PPNC also advocates for public policies that guarantee these rights in order to insure continued access to such services. Moreover, it provides educational programs and information to the people in the community, providing them with the tools they need to make healthy and informed decisions about their reproductive health.

Position Responsibilities:
The Vice President of Development (VPD) will work with PPNC’s President/CEO, Board, and volunteer committees to provide a strategic fundraising vision and lead all fundraising efforts for PPNC. The VPD will manage all departmental activities, including the creation and execution of development plans, budgeting, and reporting of fundraising systems. The VPD will identify, prioritize, research and cultivate relationships with donors, with a particular focus on individual and major donor giving. He or she will also manage a small team with expertise in events, direct mail, donor marketing, and foundation and corporation relations.

PPNC is seeking an individual with excellent leadership and management skills to expand the organization’s visibility, impact, and financial resources. The successful candidate is highly motivated, creative, and an accomplished senior development professional who possesses the ability to work collaboratively across the entire organization. He or she must demonstrate maturity and discretion when interacting with high profile supporters and others for whom the organization’s mission may resonate. The VPD must possess strong financial, communication (both written and oral), and managerial skills, as well as a proven ability to manage a portfolio of donors and solicit and secure gifts. The right candidate is an intelligent, hands-on manager who is comfortable “wearing many hats”. He or she is entrepreneurial, smart, strategic, socially and politically savvy, and has a compelling history of growing philanthropic support. He or she is comfortable interacting with a diverse network of supporters, and must be able to work closely with the President/CEO and related team members in a supportive and direct manner with a minimum of ego. In addition, he or she is a gifted writer, diplomatic, of the highest integrity, and possesses sound judgment as well as a sense of humor.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Strategically identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward donors, prospects, and other constituencies with tailored communication strategies to diversify and grow PPNC’s donor base
  • Advise and collaborate with President/CEO and Board to strategically direct PPNC’s resources towards customized cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of major donors
  • Establish and implement a donor marketing strategy that will extend PPNC’s brand
  • Represent PPNC to donors, prospects, volunteers, and other key constituents
  • Create a comprehensive annual fundraising and donor marketing plan and professionally execute diverse fundraising techniques, including personal solicitation, proposal writing, corporate sponsorships, special events, direct mail, and other donor communications
  • Supervise and direct the Development Officer on the production and logistic support for the annual fundraising and cultivation events
  • Supervise and direct the Grants & Donor Communication Manager on maintaining a calendar of foundation and corporate grant requests and reports
  • Oversee, generate content, and coordinate a distribution schedule for all donor services including solicitation and acknowledgement letters, invitations, etc.,
  • In collaboration with President/CEO, manage and inform fundraising committee of the Board of fundraising strategy, activities, achievements, and issues

  • Commitment to PPNC’s mission, vision, and strategic direction
  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree and/or CFRE accreditation preferred
  • Proven ability to manage the development process including systems, best-practice processes, staff and volunteers
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in donor cultivation and solicitation with a demonstrated capacity to manage relationships with individual donors
  • Minimum 3-5 years experience with budget management and supervision of staff
  • Unusually strong written communications skills
  • Experience with donor marketing campaigns and brand building; online and social media experience preferred
  • Proven, measurable success in planning for and securing major gifts from individuals, corporations and foundations, conducting special events. Planned giving experience a plus
  • Ability to problem-solve and make decisions independently or in collaboration with volunteers and colleagues
  • Ability to utilize personal/genuine connection to PPNC’s mission to help build constituent, volunteer, and donor populations
  • Ability to employ moves management system as a fundamental tool in all fundraising efforts
  • Ability to produce and present powerful presentations, highlighting progress of fundraising and communication campaigns for Board and Organizational Advancement discussions
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as required by events and regional travel
