Poisonous Politics Feed Acts of Violence Like Friday’s Planned Parenthood Attack in Colorado Springs

For Immediate Release
November 30,  2015

Statement from Wayne C. Shields, President and CEO, Association of Reproductive Health Professionals

“Last Friday, an armed assailant attacked Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains’ Colorado Springs affiliate in an attack that can only be described as domestic terrorism. Sadly, a brave police officer and two civilians were killed and nine people were injured in the attack. ARHP’s staff, board, and 14,000 members offer our sincere condolences to those who were injured and the families of those who were tragically killed.

“ARHP strongly supports Planned Parenthood’s essential role in providing sexual and reproductive health care, including abortion services, to those women who need it most. We applaud their efforts to keep clinics open under a continuous threat of violence.

“ARHP denounces the atmosphere of fear created by conservative anti-choice politicians and hate groups that leads to domestic terrorism like the attack in Colorado. Women’s health care includes by definition basic services such as cancer screening, pregnancy planning, sexually transmitted disease and HIV screening, and access to safe—and legal—abortion services. Ideology and politics should never interfere with access to essential, high quality clinical care.”
